The UDC states in its by-laws that ``research, the foundation of teaching, a means for the progress of the community and a support for the social transfer of knowledge, constitutes an essential function of the University of A Coruña``. For this reason, it is expressly provided that ``the University of A Coruña may create technology-based companies to promote the transfer of knowledge generated and its presence in the innovation process of the production system``.
